Sound Sessions: Episode 008 (Yo.Miyaa)

Koketso Miyaa Simka also known as “yo.miyaa” is a young, vibrant, technically skilled and crowd pleasing Hip Hop and RnB DJ from the East of Johannesburg, South Africa. Growing up in a music loving home, he developed an unconditional connection and love for music.

His journey started in 2021 during varsity in the Vaal when his circle of friends consisted of heavy Amapiano DJ’s . Each time they went to gig Miyaa tagged along, this reached a point where he sought out to DJ as they did since hip hop djs were rare in that area. This fell in line with his heavy love for hip hop and how he knew there was a market hungry for it. Quick, fast, in a hurry Yo.Miyaa then downloaded virtual dj on his laptop and started DJing for his friends in the house they all shared at that time. As he recollects it, the first time he touched the decks it went bad, forcing him to step back and get back to practicing, getting his mixes right first. However still this was just a hobby, nothing too serious.

 In 2022 he then moved back to Jozi. He told his friend Bon he wants to get serious about DJ’ing, who connected him to Yolanda Scott (now a mutual friend) that was hosting an event in Soweto. Yolanda invited him, although Miyaa couldn't use CDjs yet, he couldn’t pass this opportunity up, taking his laptop along and mixing on his pc. Time went by and the relentless young DJ taught himself the decks through Youtube, all while networking in the background, his community growing bigger and bigger.

This constant work and networking rewarded him at the end of 2022 when he became the official DJ for KiddoCSA. Establishing himself in the city has allowed the DJ's  career top grow. He’s played at Soundset Sunday,PrimeCPT, Ebumnandini, Streetfest, IAMDDB Meet and Greet, Spotify Greasy Tunes, Warner Music Africa Event, the list just goes on…Representing Hip Hop culture, this young and vibrant DJ strives to bring more attention to South African and African music in hopes of inspiring the youth of Africa to reach for the stars. Yo.Miyaa has this to say: "SLOW MOTION IS BETTER THAN NO MOTION . F**k what people have to say ,cancel out all the noise and just keep going cause its YOU vs YOU . You’re in competition with yourself and nobody else"
